Almost two thirds of secondary schools in South Gloucestershire are inadequate or require improvement, Ofsted figures show.

Out of the 17 secondary schools in the area, seven require improvement and four are inadequate, the worst rating for a school.

None are rated outstanding, and six are classed as good, according to the latest inspections.

The region has five more secondary schools which are inadequate or require improvement now, compared with five years ago.

South Gloucestershire schools have come under the spotlight recently thanks to the BBC doucmentary, School.

The six-part series following the Castle School Education Trust featured Marlwood school, placed in special measures last year, in last week's episode.

Tonight will see Mangotsfield school, who were ranked as requiring improvement at their last inspection, appear on the programme.

A Department for Education spokesman said where pupils are not receiving a good education "we will not hesitate to take action, either through the offer of support or intervention, as appropriate".

He continued: "There are 1.9 million more children in good and outstanding schools compared to 2010. This represents 86 per cent of children, compared to just 66 per cent in 2010.

“The number of schools that are rated inadequate or requires improvement has decreased since 2010, going down from 32 per cent to 14 per cent in March of this year."
