Reuben Reid has opened up about what it's like for a player returning from injury.

The Forest Green striker returned from a knee and ankle injury which sidelined him for three weeks.

Reid was pleased to play and get through 90 minutes at Oxford but explained some of the mental and pain barriers a player can experience when they first return to fitness.

"The injury I had is always going to give you some sort of feedback in terms of kicking the ball," Reid said. "I know if I put my foot through the ball, then I'm going to feel it.

"I had a shot on Saturday, went to strike it and it felt like I'd broken my ankle but 15 seconds later, it goes numb and you realise it's a body response so it's just a case of getting over that mental thing.

"You know it's going to pinch you and you're going to be in pain but it's not doing your body any further damage.

"I only trained two proper sessions and I was in a lot of pain so to get around the pitch the way I was doing and integrate into the game it was good for me."

The 30-year-old is now hoping to get a run of games under his belt and get back on the goal trail again.

"The most ideal situation will be to get games thick and fast," he commented. "The goals will come so two games at home will be good opportunities if I'm selected to achieve that."

Reid played 90 minutes during Rovers FA Cup first round stalemate at Oxford. Despite an encouraging result, the former Exeter City man wasn't satisfied with a draw.

"I wasn't really happy and I don't think many of the lads were happy," he said. "We more than matched a League One side but on the day we were more than capable of doing the job which showed in the performance.

"It wasn't a complete performance, I think we had a few instances where we could have won by two clear goals but it wasn't to be."

Forest Green return to league action on Saturday when they host 20th place Morecambe and Reid wants Rovers to rebuild some momentum in the league following the defeat at Lincoln City but is expecting a difficult test against Morecambe.

"We're back to the bread and butter and being at home we need to get those three points and start rubber stamping right up in the higher spots in the league," Reid said.

"All the games are challenges and Morecambe are a side who can go and upset results.

"They're a side who are well respected and the manager's a good guy. I don't get too involved with budgets but I hear they punch above their weight and that's down to their spirit and how their manager goes about things.

"I've lost to Morecambe side's and won against Morecambe sides so I know every game is going to be a challenge."
