A Grade I historic monument in the heart of Malmesbury has been badly damaged after being crashed into by a recycling truck this morning.

The 15th century market which cross stands in the centre of the town, at the north end of the High Street, was hit while the recycling truck was attempting to manoeuvre around the listed structure.

According to shocked witnesses the Wiltshire Council vehicle caused considerable damage to the structure after colliding with it first thing this morning.

The cross which includes an elaborately carved octagonal structure of the Perpendicular Period, is recognised as one of the best preserved of its kind in England, and was made a Grade I listed building in 1949.

Photographs from the scene of the accident shows work crews rushing to protect the cracked and crumbling stonework.

Extensive damage can clearly be seen to one of the 'bird cage' legs which supports the market cross.
