AROUND 15-20 women from the Whelford Women Group produced an amazing work of art to commemorate Armistice Day, Chris Roberts writes.
The array of over 2000 knitted poppies were due to adorn the front hedge of the Church of St Anne, however heavy showers intervened and the beautiful display had to find shelter inside Whelford’s 19th century church.
The Whelford Women group had been working on the knitted masterpiece since before Easter and, as well as the bright red Remembrance Day poppies, there were also some purple ones set round a large horseshoe to pay tribute to a real War Horse.
Pink was a gallant hunter and charger, who carried his owner, Captain Holford, throughout the Great War of 1914-1918.
Capt Holford, who lived at Pope’s Court, returned home with Pink at the end of the war and the two continued to be companions until the loyal stead died in 1927.
