I READ the letter about the A417 Missing Link in last week’s WGS with concern.
It is simply wrong – suggesting Highways England are considering a range of options – including tunnels, when they are not.
Tunnels would cost something like twice the price of the £500m we have already secured from the government, as well as causing serious problems for the emergency services, and blocking key underground aquifers.
Let’s put these pie-in-the-sky distractions behind us.
For the first time in 20 years, we are close to delivering a solution to the accidents, congestions and, sadly, deaths the A417 missing link has inflicted on this county for so long.
In the past, when Gloucestershire didn’t speak with one voice, previous government found ways to ignore the urgency of our case.
We must not allow confusion or quibbling to undermine us at this late stage.
Cllr Lynden Stowe
Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills
