Extra cash for more and better council houses could come to the Stroud district next year.

Councillors are putting in a bid to lift a cap on how much they can borrow to build houses and improve the 5,000 they own already.

However, the bid by Stroud District Council is for headroom made available before the Prime Minister recently announced she would be lifting the borrowing cap, so the upcoming Budget at the end of this month could make the bid irrelevant.

Nonetheless, if the bid is successful, the money would go on the following schemes:

  • Broadfield Road, Eastington
  • Orchard Road, Ebley
  • Queens Drive, Cashes Green
  • Ringfield Close, Nailsworth
  • Southbank, Woodchester
  • Summersfield Road, Minchinhampton
  • Tanners Piece, Nailsworth
  • The former Ship Inn site, Bridgend

But the councillor heading up the council's housing has caveated that the bid is for a loan, not straight-up cash.

"It"s important to recognise there is no new cash from government," said Chas Townley, a Labour councillor representing Stroud Uplands.

"This is government graciously granting permission for the Council to borrow funding for additional homes to be funded by rent income."
