You may start seeing a number of scarecrows popping up around Yate over the next couple of weeks, some of which you may even recognise from you childhood.

The Friends of St Mary's School has organised the town's first ever scarecrow trail as part of their annual fundraising activities.

The theme this year involves children's book characters.

Peter Pan, Little Red Riding Hood and Paddington Bear are among those who’ll be brought to life during the week-long trail, which runs from 27 October to 4 November.

In total there’ll be more than 50 colourful scarecrows scattered throughout the town for people to find.

Friends Chair Sarah Griffiths revealed how the plan came about and what they hope to achieve with it.

"One of the parents at the school suggested the idea earlier in the year and we loved it," she said.

"We’re delighted with how many parents and businesses have got involved and supported the trail.

"It’s great to hear how many people are already talking about it.

"Over the past few weeks people have been spending hours at home making the scarecrows and we can’t wait to see them all up around the town, and hope everyone who follows the trail will have fun trying to spot them all.

The trail will be launched on Saturday, October 27 with a stall in Yate Shopping Centre.

"We’ll be there, selling the maps and raffle tickets," Sarah continued.

"During the trail we’re inviting people to share their #scarecrowselfie photos on the Friends of St Mary’s Facebook page and @yatescarecrows on Twitter while they’re out and about finding them all!"

Trail maps cost £2 each or £5 for three and are available to buy from Costa Coffee, the Vintage Birdcage Café and Poole Court during the trail.

Once the trail finishes there will be a chance to view all of the scarecrows together at the school on Saturday 10 November, together with craft activities, entertainment and a barbecue, where the winner of the best scarecrow will be revealed.

All of the money will be used by the Friends to provide funds to St Mary’s Primary School. Last year the Friends raised a record £11,000 for the school which was used to fund playground improvements, help subsidise class trips and provide new books and equipment.
