I AM writing in response to John Lights’ article (October 4) referencing the delay in implementing the Missing Link. I agree with his intense frustration.

At the same time it should be realised that of some 28 solutions, including 3 tunnel suggestions, three final routes have been selected and put to public comment for a final decision.

The “Birdlip Edge”, if I can describe it as such, is one of the Cotswolds natural wonders, and deserves careful treatment to overcome the current snarl-up and provide a smooth running communication system which in itself will reduce congestion and pollution.

At the same time I feel it is not unreasonable to demand an elegant and striking landmark of outstanding design with futuristic elements.

I envisage sweeping curves of supported carriageway that will be at least comparable with some of the elegant French solutions to such natural barriers.

I fear we will actually end up with a tight budgeted compromise with little visual impact. I suspect most drivers simply want it completed, but surely we are better than that.

The Cotswolds must retain its unique quality and, if human intervention into the environment is required, as the Missing Link most certainly is, then we deserve a spectacular, and the sooner the better !
