COUNCIL tips in Gloucestershire are closing one day a week.

On Tuesdays, Fosse Cross (Cirencester) and Oak Quarry (Coleford) will be closed.

On Wednesdays, Pyke Quarry (Horsley, near Stroud) and Wingmoor Farm (Bishops Cleeve) will be closed.

On Thursdays, Hempsted (Gloucester) will be closed.

The county council says reducing opening at household recycling centres from seven days a week to six will save money.

Opening hours will be 10am-4pm from October 28, 2018 to March 30, 2019, and 10am-4pm from March 31, 2019, to October 26, 2019.

The tips at Pyke Quarry and Fosse Cross have until now been open from 9am-6.15pm Monday to Sunday all year round, except Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

The council says that as winter draws in and the nights get colder and darker council tips (also called household recycling centres) get almost 30 per cent less waste.

Tips will still be open on bank holiday Mondays and Good Friday, which are especially busy days.

Cllr Nigel Moor, cabinet member responsible for household recycling centres at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “I would like to reassure residents that we have considered a wide range of options.

"We need to make sure taxpayers’ money is spent wisely, while making sure our household recycling centres are open when people need them.

“We have made sure residents will have a reasonable alternative recycling centre with this closure pattern, by closing sites at opposite sides of the county.

"We will be monitoring the new opening arrangements and how the sites are used.”
