Emergency services have confirmed that a motorcyclist has been killed in a crash on the A46 near Tormarton.

Avon and Somerset Police were called at yesterday afternoon at around 4:00pm, (Monday, September 24) following a collision between a car and a motorcycle.

The incident took place on The A46 Tolldown Road to Shire Hill.

Police warned drivers on their Twitter page to avoid the area, as the road was likely to be closed for some time.

South Western Ambulance Service also attended the incident, and they released a statement that confirmed that there was one casualty in the collision.

"We were called on Monday at 4.11pm to attend a road traffic incident on Tolldown Road, Tormarton." The statement said.

"We sent various resources to attend the incident including: two ambulances, an air ambulance, a hazardous area response team, and an operations officer.

"There was one reported casualty."

The statement from Avon and Somerset Police's Twitter looked to inform those of the closure.

"The A46 Tolldown Road to Shire Hill in Tomarton is closed after an incident in which a motorcyclist has sadly died," it said.

"We were called to a collision between a car and motorcycle at 4.10pm today.

"Please avoid the area. The road will be closed for some time."

The road closure caused travel disruption, with traffic moving particularly slowly on the A46 between Sands Hill and M4 junction 18 for Bath and Tormarton.

Avon and Somerset Police have since appealed for information on the incident, saying: "We’re appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in Tormarton.

"The incident happened at 4.09pm yesterday (Monday September 24) at the crossroads at Shire Hill.
 

"A motorcycle travelling between Tormarton and Marshfield was in collision with a car.

"The motorcyclist – a man in his 60s – received treatment at the scene but sadly died shortly afterwards.

"The road was closed for a detailed examination by collision investigators.

"We’re keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident who may have information to help our enquiries.

"Anyone able to help is asked to contact the collision investigation unit on 101, quoting reference 5218214487."
