THE Tetbury community came together last week to commemorate a speech made 72 years ago by Sir Winston Churchill, Kevin Painter writes.
The Mayor of Tetbury Sandra Ball hosted a candle lighting ceremony with their French counterparts on Wednesday, September 19 at 8pm on the steps of the Market House.
Churchill's speech, made on September 19 1946, talked about the hope he had for the rebuilding of the European family.
The unique lighting ceremony came at the twinning ceremony in July, when the Mayor of Tetbury and the Mayor of Chatillon-sur-Indre, France, signed a document of friendship.
At the end of the twinning ceremony the young footballers of Tetbury were given candles and a copy of the speech made by Churchill.
The ceremony was recorded and beamed live through Youtube to Chatillon-sur-Indre, in France.
