SIX fire stations in the area all responded to a call out after a major fire broke out at a businesse site near Winterbourne on Wednesday.

The Saw Mill site on Cuckoo Lane, Winterbourne Down, is a yard that is the base for a number of businesses.

The blaze started at around 11am, with crews reacting quickly to get to the scene.

There were major concerns from the fire service about the amount of wood that was on the site, as well as a nearby buildings and woodland.

Crews from Yate fire station, Kingswood, Patchway, Bedminster, Temple fire station and Avonmouth all tackled the blaze after large amounts of timber measuring 20x20m, trees and bracken caught alight.

At around 4pm, Avon Fire and Rescue Service said the fire had been brought under control, and that efforts by crews were starting to be scaled back.

It is not known completely how the fire started, but Ian Campbell, Incident Commander revealed that it was not suspicious and nobody had been injured.

“We are really pleased that we managed to stop the fire spreading,” he said.

“We are not sure exactly where it started, but it spread on to the woodland right next to the businesses.

“Had it spread further then we would have lost the whole buildings so we are pleased that didn’t happen.”

Crews were met at the scene by some problems however, with the wind and low water pressure meaning they struggled to get control of the blaze.

Two fire engines were at the scene to bring water to the site, this is called water relaying and it involved engines ferrying water back and forth to maintain the power of the hoses.

A statement from Avon Fire and Rescue Service detailed that the incident was

“The fire has now been brought under control. Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were raised up on a turntable ladder and used two hose reels and jets to extinguish the fire.

“The cause is thought to be accidental.

“One crew will continue to dampen down the fire for at least the rest of the day.”
