SWINDON fencers Noah Goryn and Amelia Franks both won gold at the Dunstan Foil sword competition at Glastonbury.

The pair had both triumphed at last year's event in the U11 category and repeated the trick this time at U13 level.

Coach Neil Bromley said: "This is a remarkable achievement by two great fencers.

"They both joked about not wanting to hand their trophies back from last year, so I told them they would have to win again this year and that's just what they have done.

"I couldn't be happier and I'm so proud of them both - things are coming together nicely at the club."

In the girls event, Franks won all but one of her pool bouts, losing only to fellow Swindon fencer Rhianna Cole.

Both girls had byes in their opening direct elimination bouts - progressing through the quarter final 10-4 and 10-5 respectively.

In the semi-finals, things were tighter, Cole winning 10-7 and Franks 10-8 to set up a re-match in the final, which Franks won 10-6.

"I would especially like to mention Rhianna who has come on tremendously with her fencing this year - it's only a matter of time before she wins her first regional competition," Bromley added.

Franks said: "To have won the Dunstan Foil twice in two years has really made me very happy.

"Rhianna always gives her best in fencing and we bring out the best in each other on the piste".

In the boys competition, Goryn won all of his bouts to emerge as the number one seed then, after a bye in the first round, he won his first direct elimination bout 10-2 and the semi final 10-4 before winning the final against the number two seed 10-5.

"Winning the boys U11s category last year was great and I wasn't sure how I would get on this year, being young for the age group," Goryn said.

"Everything came together nicely and I am thrilled to have the Dunstan title again".
