ALL customers at a city restaurant were reportedly charged twice for debit card payments, due to a card machine error.

Lincoln Tomas visited Ruby’s Cantonese restaurant, in Bransford Road, with three friends last Thursday (August 29) – discovering over the weekend they’d all been charged double for the £105 bill.

The 30-year-old, who lives in the city, said he called the restaurant and was told all customers were charged double by mistake – he estimated there were over 100 people in there that evening.

Mr Tomas, who has eaten at Ruby’s in the past without any issues, was worried that the mistake could have been made before.

The error was likely due to an issue with a card terminal run by Cardnet, a joint venture between Lloyds Bank and First Data, affecting thousands across the UK.

In most cases, transactions only showed up once on many shop, pub and restaurant receipts.

Lloyds Banking Group said people had been refunded and just under five per cent of Cardnet machine transactions were affected during part of August 29.

A bank spokeswoman said: “A small number of transactions processed last Thursday by Cardnet were duplicated.

“Action has been taken to rectify this situation as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Speaking on Wednesday, she said all victims of the error were reimbursed on Monday and Tuesday.

She went on to confirm that this issue is “not ongoing” and all correcting entries have been passed back to the issuing banks and will be processed “within their timelines”.

Ruby’s declined to comment.
