THIS weekend, Malmesbury will be making a special effort to mark the upcoming 100th anniversary of the First World War.
On Friday, September 7, at 2pm and Saturday, September 8, at 10.15am from the Town Hall for free, Malmesbury historian Charles Vernon will lead talks that look at the war memorials around Malmesbury and the stories behind some of the names.
On Sunday, September 9, from 2pm to 4.30pm, there will be an opportunity for visitors to talk to volunteers dressed as, and telling the stories of, Malmesbury families and their soldier sons outside the houses where they lived in Malmesbury as it existed in 1918.
Tickets are available in advance and on the day at Athelstan Museum for £6. Any surplus from the history trail on Sunday will fund the continuing work of Malmesbury Civic Trust and Athelstan Museum.
Event co-ordinator Campbell Ritchie said: "The First World War had a significant effect across the whole community of Malmesbury and it is fitting to try and tell some of the stories of real people, many of whom still have relatives living in Malmesbury, at the real places associated with them as the 100th anniversary of the end of the war gets close."
