A DAD has called on parents to prevent their children from walking dogs alone if they can’t act responsibly after his wife was lacerated by a dog lead like 'razor wire'.

Jane Dunkley was out walking her cockapoo Clara with 16-year-old daughter Hannah when a retractable lead wrapped around her legs, injuring her.

Husband Ken Dunkley, originally from Worcester, said his wife “sustained deep cuts to both legs” when a white terrier, being walked by two girls aged around 12-years-old, wrapped its lead around her.

The injury happened after Mrs Dunkley was walking on the playing fields around Droitwich Spa Leisure Centre and stopped to speak to an elderly dog walker.

According to Mrs Dunkley, the dog’s extender lead became wrapped several times around her legs.

“The girls were just laughing,” said Mr Dunkley. “She managed to get herself free in the end, but she has a cut into the back of her legs right into the knee joint.”

Mr Dunkley has lived on Coppice Way, Droitwich, for six years, and said the cut is still visible 10 days after the incident.

He believes parents should ensure their children can handle walking a dog alone and understand the dangers, particularly if using a thin retractable lead.

Mr Dunkley, a former West Midlands Ambulance Service control manager, described the impact of a retractable lead as similar to “razor wire.”

He said he remembers an incident years ago when a woman lost the end of her finger after it was caught in a retractable lead.

The former Bishop Perowne CE College student added: “It’s just annoying that they didn’t realise the damage they could cause

“Most dog owners are great – we look out for each other.”
