THE driver of a car has died after a crash with a lorry overnight on the A46 Evesham Bypass.

The man in his 40s was driving a silver Vauxhall Zafira and collided with a white HGV, suffering fatal injuries.

An extensive collision investigation remains ongoing following the incident, which happened around 12.45am on Tuesday (August 21), near to the where the road crosses the River Avon.

West Mercia Police are appealing for witnesses.

The A46 is likely to remain closed with traffic being diverted through Evesham town centre causing delays, according to Highways England.

“Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that there was nothing that could be done to save the occupant of the car and they were confirmed dead at the scene,” said an ambulance service spokesman.

The lorry driver, a 61-year-old man, remained trapped for around 50 minutes with West Midlands Ambulance staff and working with firefighters to free him.

He had suffered multiple injuries, according to the spokesman.

“He was given pain relief and had a leg splinted and wounds dressed before he was taken to the major trauma centre at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

“The doctor from the critical care car travelled with the ambulance crew,” he added.

An ambulance arrived eight minutes after the call and was backed up by a second ambulance, a paramedic officer, the MERIT trauma doctor and The Air Ambulance Service Critical Care Car.

The crash took place between the B4035 near Bengeworth and the A44 near Tywford.

The police have said the car driver’s family has been informed and they are being supported by specially trained officers.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call West Mercia Police on 101, quoting incident number 24 of 21 August.
