South Cerney 5 Defence Academy 1
A return to form for South Cerney Seniors saw them complete a comfortable 5-1 victory over their visitors from the Defence Academy in the first home match of the new season.
Victories for stand-in Captain Walter Sutherland and John Quick (4&3), Gerald Tucker and Trevor Jordan (4&3), Peter Curnock and Guy Montezuma (2&1), Rod German and Dave Fletcher (4&2), Andy Taylor and Matthew Smith (4&3) ensured a comprehensive victory. Only last year’s Captain Dave Mitchell playing with Paul Taylor (lost 3&2) prevented a clean sweep
Winter Knock Out Division 1
It may have taken until the final week of April to complete, but Division 1 of the Winter KO competition was eventually brought to its conclusion by a victory for match-play specialist, Ian Haslam who triumphed with a 3&2 win over Gerald Tucker.
April Medal
The first qualifying Medal of the year was played in breezy conditions which placed a premium on accurate rather than long golf shots. It was therefore no surprise to those playing that both divisional winners enjoy a reputation for straight hitting. John Carrington won Division 1 with a net score of 73, followed by Andy Hughes with a net 75. Division 2 saw the ony two sub-par rounds of the day with Matthew Smith’s net 68 clinching second place behind Steve Kaufmann’s impressive 66. Steve and Matthew both now find themselves playing in Division 1 after the resulting cuts to their handicaps.
Cotswold Edge Ladies 1 South Cerney Ladies 3
The Ladies had a successful trip to Cotswold Edge for a friendly match, coming away with a 3-1 victory over the home team. The winning pairings were: Brenda Smith and Annie Lawton (6&5), June Daniels and Sue Beard (9&6), and Heather Whelan and Chris Mitchell (3&1). After this impressive performance, the Ladies will be looking for further opportunities to test themselves against other clubs during the season.
