FAIRFORD boss Jody Bevan must play the waiting game as the fate of his side’s future in the Hellenic Premier Division future sits with the league’s committee.

It is not yet known how many teams will be relegated from the regional fifth tier of non-league football, though the league confirmed in a statement last week that at least one team will face the drop.

Bevan’s men could only earn a point against mid-table Brackley Town Saints on Saturday afternoon, meaning Fairford ended the season second from bottom in 18th.

Despite the club’s Premier Division future still being in doubt, Bevan insists he will look to build a stronger team next season.

He said: “We’re in a strange situation where we’re prepared for the worst, but at the same time we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we may get a reprieve.

“I’ve learnt so much this year I could probably write a book. But I’ve got a core body of players that have battled their hearts out all season.

“We’ve ultimately been let down by the number of players that fall into that bracket.

“I’ve got several players that have been there through the majority of the season and have stuck with it through thick and thin.

“Whatever happens they can hold their heads high with how they performed this season. Now I need to add numbers to the squad.”

Bevan played himself on Saturday and scored Fairford’s only goal as they drew 1-1 with their youthful rivals.

A first-half penalty provided Brackley with their goal as the points were shared.

“They’re a development team, they were exactly what we expected,” said Bevan.

“They were a team of youngsters that want to play football from the back.

“They dominated the game for long periods of time, but we kept our shape and allowed them to have the ball in their half while denying them chances.

“Over the course of the game they had very few clear-cut chances.

“With what we had available, we aimed to play from the break and cause damage from set-pieces.”
