VETS have urged dog owners to be wary of the Alabama Rot condition.

A dog is currently being treated at the George Veterinary Hospital in Malmesbury believed to have the condition.

The condition, scientifically known as Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy, has had 30 reported cases of the disease in 2018 so far.

The cause of the disease is unknown and there is no specific test for the condition. Alabama Rot causes damage to blood vessels in the skin and kidneys.

Owners have been urged to keep an eye for certain symptoms by the George Veterinary Hospital. They say dogs may seem off colour and perhaps have signs of gastro-intestinal disease, including a reluctance to eat, vomiting/diarrhoea so blood and urine tests could be useful in helping to diagnose it. The hospital also say another sign is skin lesions found in the lower limbs and feet may also be a sign.

There is no test of the condition as it would require a biopsy of the kidneys which can be harmful as anaesthetising a dog could make the condition worse.
