PARENTS are being urged to check that their children have received the measles vaccine following a rise in cases across Gloucestershire.

Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that can be very unpleasant and sometimes lead to serious complications.

This warning comes after Public Health England reported a rise in cases across Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and the rest of the South West.

Dominic Mellon, consultant in communicable disease control for PHE South West, said: “The cases we have seen recently in the area have affected young adults. It is important to be aware that it is never too late to have the vaccine.

If you’ve not received two doses of the vaccine in the past, or you’re unsure speak to your GP.”

Vaccine uptake rates continue to remain below the 95 per cent level of immunisation recommended by PHE.

Coming in contrast to last year’s statement regarding the elimination of measles in the UK, confirmed by the World Health Organisation.

However, due to the rise in cases, PHE can confirm it is working with local authorities in the area to investigate reports of measles.

Dr Julie Yates, lead consultant for screening and immunisation South West, said: “Since January 1, 2018, 15 cases of measles have been confirmed in the area, compared to no cases during the same period between January and March 2017.

We’d like to encourage people travelling to countries with ongoing measles outbreaks to ensure they are up to date with their MMR vaccines before they go abroad.”
