AN 18-year-old woman has been killed in a car crash on the A40 in Herefordshire.

It happened between Ross-on-Wye and Weston-under-Penyard shortly before 7.30am this morning.

Police say two vehicles were involved.

It is believed a white Vauxhall Vivaro van had been travelling eastbound in the direction of Weston-Under-Penyard and a silver Vauxhall Corsa had been travelling in the opposite direction towards Ross.

The 18-year-old, who was driving the Corsa, had serious injuries and was transferred by air ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where she later died.

Her next of kin have been informed.

The driver of the Vivaro, a man in his thirties, attended Hereford hospital.

The A40 was closed while emergency services were at the accident. The road has now reopened.

Investigating officer Sergeant Andy Wortley, of West Mercia Police, said: "We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision, or to anyone who may have seen either vehicle prior to the incident taking place, to please come forward.

"It is thought that prior to police attending the scene, an off-duty female nurse assisted in offering first aid. We would also like to speak with her as she may be able to assist with enquiries.

"If you have any information, please call 101 quoting incident 59s of 19 March 2018."
