TRIBUTES have been paid to a ‘hero’ bus driver who died in a car crash near Malmesbury over the Christmas period.

Nana Boateng was heading home to Chippenham for the festive season when his Ford Fiesta struck a lorry shortly before 4am on Christmas Eve, on the A429 near Hullavington.

Tributes have been pouring in for the the First Bath bus driver, from a host of family, friends and colleagues who described him as a hero, for the part he played in helping to save a woman’s life just three months ago.

A statement from Nana's family said: "Nana, you went away so suddenly with no time to say goodbye, but you cannot be parted because precious memories like your infectious smile and laughter never dies.

"Nana, you were there when we needed you and stuck up for us when no one else did.  Your kindness extended to everyone you met; a brother who truly lived to the fullest.

"This tribute is to honour you - our brother, friend, family.

"In Love you conquer Hate; an angel who lived on earth - you will be truly missed and never be forgotten.

"Love you always, your family."

In October, Nana used the double decker bus he was driving to shield a woman who had collapsed from traffic, until the emergency services arrived. He then stayed at the scene to help passengers onto another bus while directing traffic.

Richard Lewis, First Bath’s business manager, said: “We’re incredibly shocked and saddened by what’s happened to Nana.

“He was a popular member of our Bath team and will be greatly missed.

“His actions a few months ago, when his quick thinking and compassion saved a life, speaks volumes about his character.

“From everyone at First Bus, we would like to offer our condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Malmesbury resident Malinda Johnson who knew Nana described him as ‘a great laugh’.

“I’m in shock, he was such a great laugh with a wicked sense of humour. “He was kind and friendly.

“I can’t believe he’s gone, I’m going to miss him.”

He is always cheerful and warmly greets you with his smile. Rest in Peace mate and keep smiling up there.'
