GLOUCESTERSHIRE police are on the hunt for a potentially injured driver who fled the scene of an accident on the M5 at around 3am this morning.

Police are investigating the crash, believed to have only involved one vehicle, which took place on the southbound carriageway between junctions 9 and 10.

They are trying to trace the driver of a silver Mercedes E220 which left the road and collided with a barrier on the nearside before going back across the carriageway to the central reservation.

The driver left the scene and, despite a search involving a police dog and helicopter, has not been located.

Officers are concerned that the driver may have sustained serious injuries which may require medical attention.

The road was closed for investigation and vehicle recovery.

Officers would like the driver to come forward, or to hear from anyone who saw the vehicle on the M5 or has seen anyone who looks as if they may have been injured in a collision.

Anyone with information should call 101 or email 101@gloucestershire.police.uk quoting incident 45 of 28/12.
