IN JULY 1969, Cirencester opened a new Tourist Information Centre in the Forum Car Park to the delight of those trying to promote tourism in the Cotswolds.

The chairman of the Cotswolds Publicity Association Noel Dean declared, “We have hidden our light under a bushel for too long. We have an awful lot to offer.”

While Jack Scantlebury of Cirencester Urban Council added, “I think this is a magnificent building, and when we get a sign in the Market Place, I’m sure there will be a lot more enquiries.”

As novel as it was, the teeny demountable building looked somewhat temporary; as if it could be taken away on the back of a truck at any moment.

Cirencester’s Tourist Information centre is now homed in a more permanent-looking location inside the Corinium Museum building on Park Street.
