CIRENCESTER Amateur Boxing Club have a new national champion after Jason Frayling won the 45kg weight category final at the England Boxing Schools and Minors Championships in Manchester.

Both 12-year-old Frayling and Michael O’Regan from 2nd City ABC brought unbeaten records to the ring but the Birmingham boxer had no answer to the Cirencester lad’s combinations.

Frayling dominated the three rounds and was crowned champion on a unanimous points decision.

ABA coach Simon Knowles said: “Jason was outstanding and thoroughly deserved his win.

"It's only his first year of boxing and he has now won all five of his bouts including a national title. He's very quiet and lovely to work with, but a bit special.

"We were at a show last year at St Josephs Boxing Club in Wales when Jason's dad Ethan came up and said he liked the way we coached.

"The family later moved from Wales to Wootton Bassett and Jason has been coming for the last year. Now his dad is learning how to be a coach with us."

Frayling is the third national finalist, and second champion, in as many years for Cirencester ABC – a wonderful achievement for a small club.

"Jordan Wall won us a first national title two years ago," said Knowles. "I trained him from 8 to 18 and he was one of the best at his weight in the country. Sadly, he has now quit boxing.

"Thomas Varey got to a national championship last year when we thought he was unlucky to lose.

"Now Jason has won a national title and if he sticks with the sport I could see him winning nationals every year.

"We have finished the season on a tremendous high, but frankly I'm burnt out and in need of a break. Tuesday was the first day off I have had since September.

"Tom Boswell and myself do all the coaching. We are just volunteers and every weekend we are taking the kids to boxing shows.

"We are continuing to look for new premises as the gym we use in Cirencester is being sold to become flats.

"We are limited in what we can do there as so much of our equipment is still in boxes.

"We are trying to find premises in Swindon as Ciren is too far to travel for many of our boxers."
