RESIDENTS are urged to register their appliances for home safety on 'Register My Appliance Day' today.

As part of the Fire Kills campaign, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service are calling on residents to register their white goods so that they can be contacted easily if a safety repair is ever needed.

The Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMEDA) ran a survey earlier this year about domestic appliances in the home.

The results highlighted that fewer than 50 per cent of people registered their large domestic appliances with the manufacturer.

Twenty-nine per cent of those who did not register said they didn’t think it was necessary, while 39 per cent said they forgot.

The survey also revealed that 70 per cent of British adults with a fridge or fridge freezer more than ten years old have never had a professional review or check to verify if they are safely connected or running correctly.

Many of the 60 leading brands on www.registermyappliance.org.uk are offering to enter registrants into free draws for a range of prizes.

Cllr Nigel Moor, cabinet member for fire, planning and infrastructure at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “Registering your appliance can really help home safety, and firefighters can help you do this as part of a Safe and Well visit.

“Sadly fires in the home can and do happen, but by registering any large appliances you have, it reduces the risk of that ever happening to you."

A fire at a house in Moss Way, Cirencester last year, which killed two pet cats, was said by neighbours to have been an electrical fire that may have started from the kitchen.
