ALTHOUGH Cirencester Athletics Club’s weekend racing was limited to three parkruns, there was plenty of success to celebrate.

The best performance of the weekend came from Holly Tugwell who was the first lady and fifth overall in the Hastings 5k race in an age category with a course record of 18m29s.

More success was found in the shape of 16-year-old Luke Campbell who is in the process of switching to Cirencester from Swindon Harriers.

Luke represented his new club at Chippenham where he not only won the race outright in a time of 18m12s, but also set a new course record.

Swindon Parkrun FIVE club members turned out on a cold and frosty morning for the Swindon parkrun, with Tony Shelbourn the first home in 53rd place.

Although slightly disappointed with his time, Tony was first MV70 and set a new course record for his age category. This was first race since June 2015 due to injury and illness.

Not far behind was Dave Moss running in his 101st parkrun and Gordon Jones who was second in his age group.

Cirencester results: 53. Tony Shelbourn 21m30s; 67. Dave Moss 22m05s; 70.

Gordon Jones 22m10s; 80. Martin Pulley 22m30s and 194. Barbara Thomas 26,18s.

496 finishers.

Barbara is well on her way to her 200th parkrun and is aiming to emulate her achievement of 2015 when she completed 100 races in the year.

County Road Race Championship Awards

BARBARA Thomas and two of the club’s other experienced lady racers went to a reception last week to collect their awards in the County Road Race Championship.

Ruth Fulford won the FV65 category while Barbara and Liza Darroch were runners in the FV55 and FV65 categories.

Upholding honour for the men was Gordon Jones who came third in the MV65.

Beginners Group

AT THE other end of the scale, in terms of racing experience, were seven enthusiastic runners, new to the sport, who took part in the club’s first meeting of the new beginners group.

Club coaches Colin Tapley and Martin Croucher guided them through the initial training session and more are expected to join the group in the weeks to come.
