CANAL trips in Gloucestershire will soon be made that little bit more relaxing with a new mobile phone app that can open bridges.
The Canal and River Trust has revealed plans to convert 14 bridges on the Gloucester to Sharpness canal that are currently operated by bridge keepers.
When Sandfield Bridge is converted in either August or September it will be the first in Britain to use the technology.
Boaters will be able to download an app or telephone a new control centre in Gloucester to open bridges.
It is similar to technology used at level crossings.
