KYLE NETHERCOTT maintained his rich vein of form at international veteran badminton tournaments when helping England beat Scotland to lift the McCoig Trophy.

Nethercott, from Latton, and his partner John Bowker, won the Men's Doubles 21-11, 21-16. as England beat the auld enemy 16 games to 11 at SportScotland’s Inverclyde National training centre in Largs.

Nethercott then took part in the Yonex Scottish International Veterans Championships at the same venue where, again partnering Lancashire's Bowker, he won the Men's Over 50 Doubles.

Nethercott said: "We beat a very strong pair from Denmark in the semi final and then saw off the local hopes, Steve Thompson and Ross Gladwyn from Scotland in the final.

"I also reached the semi final of the mixed doubles."

Before Christmas, Nethercott and Bowker justified their No.1 seeding to battle through six matches and win the Over 50s Men’s Doubles at the national championships held at the Worcester Arena.

He could not quite pull off the national doubles double as he and Pauline Williams from Yorkshire went down narrowly in the mixed final to No.1 seeds and reigning champions John Bowker and Chris Summers (Yorkshire) 25-23, 19-21, 13-21 in three hard-fought ends, coming within two points of the championship in the second game.
