The air has turned a startling shade of blue over Cirencester over the last week and it’s started an interesting debate - is swearing ever appropriate?
A play about grief at a theatre sparked the heated exchange, which came to a (pretty clean-mouthed) crescendo when the show’s director, a vicar and a local councillor met to discuss the issue further.
Although the previous sentence might sound like the perfect set up for the kind of joke your dad might tell, the outcome was surprisingly refreshing.
In a time when we all might be quick to take to our keyboards and condemn without debating the genuine issues at hand, the fact that a group of adults came together to discuss differing opinions suddenly seems like a novel approach.
Regardless of where you sit on the big Cirencester expletive debate, and the arguments from both sides have been both surprising and meaningful, perhaps the best thing we can take away is that we should listen and discuss, before we judge.
Social media has given us more opportunities to speak our minds, lets take time to listen too.
One Minute is at the Barn Theatre in Cirencester until June 16, for more information and tickets visit barntheatre.org.uk/performances/one-minute
