Mike Appleby was an ever-present member of the PE Department during my years at Deer Park School and Sixth Form (1971-79).
I know I speak for many when I say he was not only a good teacher, but a good man who always gave you an opportunity through his patience and encouragement to do well.
On behalf of all of those who kicked or picked up a ball, learned to hold a bat or a racket or were encouraged to participate in athletics or any sport during those years and for many years afterwards, we owe you a great deal - Thank you Mr Appleby.

I first met Mike Appleby in September 1967, when he was my first form tutor at Deer Park school. I rapidly formed the view that Mike was very kind-hearted and a true gentleman. Throughout the 53 years that I have known Mike, I have come to regard him as a much valued, true friend whom I have always held in the highest esteem.

I shall be forever grateful to Mike for delivering the eulogy at the funeral of my late father, Reg Cook. Several attendees at the service commented to me privately about the superb job that Mike did on my behalf.

Mike will always have a very special place in my memories. RIP Mike.

Such sad news, Mr Appleby was very much loved at Siddington primary school as Headmaster and I for one will remember him fondly as one of his pupils 1987 - 1991. One such memory from around 1990 was when the school was gifted a kwick cricket set from some organisation & I think I may have been bragging (as a 10 year old would) about my batting prowess. Mr Appleby offered to bowl one overarm at me & knocked the ball plastic stumps over much to my dismay. Lesson learned that day ha ha. Too many memories for this message board mainly relating to my misadventures and cycling. Admiring his lovely blue road bike (Argos perhaps?) or going to see Mike & his sons compete at the local 10TT from near Fairford. This inspired me 20 odd years later to do the local U48 through Latton.
An absolutely lovely bloke above all & an inspiration to many.
