DIANA, Princess of Wales thrilled crowds and music lovers when she attended a charity concert in Tetbury in the summer of 1986 at the Church of St Mary the Virgin.

The concert was given by Japan’s famous Suzuki children in aid of the Malcolm Sargent cancer fund for children of which Princess Diana was patron.

She was wearing a pale pink dress and white chiffon, sparkling with silver sequins.

The concert raised £8,000 of which £6,000 went to the fund and £2,000 went to the Tetbury church restoration appeal.

Tetbury crowds watched Princess Diana arrive at the church after the half-mile drive from Highgrove.

As she left, she delighted those waiting by stopping to chat.

The 10 children, aged between seven and 13, held the audience of 700 spellbound as they played music by Mozart, Sibelius, Chopin and Mendelssohn and Kriesler.

The children were well experienced in royal concerts having previously played at the home of the Crown Prince of Japan.

After the concert, Madam Suzuki and several of the children presented Princess Diana with gifts, toys, a picture of their home and a traditional Japanese fan.
