COTSWOLD towns and villages remembered the fallen of two World Wars with Remembrance services and parades on Sunday. (Standard, November 1965) *REMEMBRANCE Sunday at Bourton-on-the-Water was marked by a greatly increased number who attended both the short service at the War Memorial and also the service which followed at the parish church of St Lawrence at which extra chairs had to be brought in to seat the congregation of over 400.The parade from British Legion headquarters to the Memorial was led by the Pipe Band of the Central Flying School. Augmented by pipers and drummers of the Gloucester City Pipe Band and in addition to the British Legion contingent under the command of their secretary Mr A W Wright included two flights from the Royal Air Force Station at Little Rissington commanded by Sq Ldr D McLean and scouts and cubs from the Bourton troops under Colin Johns.

AT BIBURY parish church a large congregation of parishioners, neighbours and visitors attended the morning Service of Remembrance. Members of the British Legion and the Baptist Church were welcomed by the Vicar the Rev D Taffinder who conducted the service. Following the singing of the National Anthem the British Legion Banner was presented at the altar. General J C Haydon then placed a wreath of poppies on the war memorial and the Vicar read the names of those in the parish who died on active service during the two World Wars. The address was given by the vicar who spoke of a gradual awakening of a new charity towards men of all nations and creeds which had followed the two World Wars. A muffled peal was rung by Bibury bellringers.

THERE was also a large congregation at Arlington Baptist Remembrance Service on Sunday evening including a contingent of British Legion members and ex-servicemen. The service was conducted by the Rev Dennis Lant of Leafield, Oxfordshire who also gave the address.

IN SOUTH Cerney there was an excellent turnout. Both the men’s and the women’s section of South Cerney’s branch of the British Legion were joined by scouts, guides and cubs. The church service which was well attended was conducted by the Vicar of South Cerney, the Rev Dr P Stacey Lewis. Lessons were read by Mr H J Parham and Arthur Webb with Mr R Cousens and Mr F Wanstall also taking part in the service.

SERVICES conducted by the Rural dean of Cirencester the Rev A J Turner at both North Cerney and Bagendon were well attended. The North Cerney and Duntisbourne branch of the British Legion paraded outside Duntisbourne Abbots village hall and marched to the parish church. A wreath was laid on the war memorial and a short service was conducted by the Rector of Duntisbourne the Rev O A Griffiths. There were some 25 on parade commanded by the chairman of the British Legion branch, Major John Talbot.

A COMBINED Remembrance Service of Evensong was held for the parishes of Colesbourne and Rendcomb at Rendcomb church conducted by the Archdeacon of Cheltenham the Venerable G Hutchins.

MORE than 200 people gathered in Northleach market Place for a short service conducted by the Vicar of Northleach the Rev R B R Walker. The parish church choir walked from the church of St Peter and Paul to the War Memorial. At the beginning of the service held later in the church the Standard of the Legion was carried in procession through the church by Mr F R Green. A wreath was laid on the memorial in church by Major R E Fleming, vice president.

FOLLOWING a parade in Stow-on-the-Wold square by the British Legion and other organisations a united service was held in the parish church which was attended by 320 people.
