THE Standard has done it again, After three swinging hours in Cirencester Police club on Friday evening last week a team from the Standard shattered their way to victory in the annual charity conker match.
On the way to their win the Standard team defeated the best of 20 other teams entered in the contest which this year has raised about £300 for local charities thanks mainly to sponsorship from seven local companies.
Club secretary Bob Fuller said “It is the first time the event has been sponsored in this way and we are very grateful for the response. We hope that even more local companies may feel able to come forward next year.”
The main contest took in a number of smaller but equally keenly fought competitions including that between a CID team from Cirencester and a CID team from Stroud the match which was the basis some years ago for the event. For the third year running the Stroud team smashed their way to victory.
But the Cirencester Police were the winners in another needle match that against a team of Security Police from the US Air Force based at RAF Fairford.
The sponsoring companies this year were Whitbreads Brewery, Johnsons Newsagents, Whiddett’s Bakery, Ann’s Pantry, May Brothers Bakers and Alexcars.
