PUPILS of Malmesbury Primary School had the taste of sweet success on Saturday when they not only won their class in the town’s fantastic colourful carnival but they also took the championship trophy as well.

The 20 children along with members of the school’s PTA , all with green hair and wearing white overalls, were in a tableau Charlie and the Chocolate Factory complete with boat and sweet making machine.

The children’s storybook theme took the Junior Club class and then went on to be named champions receiving the Ron Pierce Memorial Trophy and an additional £20 prize.

The high winds earlier on Saturday dropped just in time for the parade through the streets. There were 34 competitive tableaux and scores of fancy dress characters along with four bands and four troupes of majorettes.

While the parade, once more of very high standard, was watched by thousands, the number of spectators lining the route was down, no doubt kept away by the threatening weather. It meant for the first time for several years that the total taken up by the collectors was just under £1,000, about £200 down.
