AFTER several years of waiting the village of Bibury has finally been provided with a footbridge over the River Coln to remove the danger of pedestrians using the Swan Bridge.
The bridge was erected by Glos County Council Highways Dept after being transported in one piece from the manufacturers in Devon. It is situated just downstream from the Swan Road Bridge which has become increasingly dangerous for pedestrians over the years because of its situation on a narrow bend and the increase in heavy traffic.
The total cost of the bridge which is made from Douglas fir and teak is £6,000 and it took a 75 ton crane to lift it into position.
The need for a footbridge became evident several years ago when an elderly visitor was crushed against the wall of the bridge and had to have her leg amputated.
