Wrag Barn brothers bounce back from St Andrews disappointment

WILTSHIRE began their defence of the English County Golf Championship in sizzling style this week – with Wrag Barn, Highworth-based brothers Ben and Josh Loughrey to the fore, writes Danny Hall.

Wiltshire edged past Devon in the opening game of South West Week held at Cumberwell Park GC on Sunday without the help of the Loughreys, who were travelling back from Scotland after a disappointing time at the important St Andrews Links Trophy.

But Josh Loughrey landed running in the Monday natch with Cornwall, partnering Ali James to a comfortable 3&2 win as Wiltshire triumphed by 8.25 to 6.25. Ben earned a half in his foursome, despite being penalised two holes for having 15 clubs in his bag.

In Tuesday’s 36-hole strokeplay championship, however, Ben showed his true England International credentials when taking the individual title with a spectacular 9 under par total.

With Josh chipping in a -2 score, the six nominated Wiltshire players romped the team title by an aggregate of no fewer than 25 shots.

Wiltshire now go on to represent the South West in the English County Finals at Beau Desert near Cannock in Staffordshire on September 29-30 when they face the champions from the North, Midlands and South East.
