FORMER World Darts Champion Mark Webster thinks that Cirencester amateur Paul Boulton could cause an upset when he takes on the top pros in the sport at the £200,000 Speedy Services UK Open, which starts on Thursday, June 7.

Boulton, a Wiltshire county player, saw off scores of hopeful amateurs at a qualifying tournament in Cardiff where he recorded an impressive 15-dart score of 421.

Now he heads to the De Vere Whites Hotel, attached to the Reebok Stadium in Bolton, and is set to play in front of a huge live TV audience on Sky Sports HD.

Boulton’s first opponent in the preliminary round is former World U21 champion Arron Monk from Basingstoke. The clash is due to be the third match on the main stage on Thursday night at approximately 8.15pm.

Webster, who won his world title in 2008 and was a beaten semi-finalist in this tournament last year, said: “Paul was pretty much unplayable on the day in Cardiff. He was brilliant.

“If he keeps playing like that, then I’ll do well to avoid him myself.”

Boulton, 46, said: “I’ve played a few big players before so I’m pleased that I’ll be getting another opportunity to make a name for myself.

“It’s going to a special event so I’m going to make the most of it.

“I have never played Arron before but I have previously lost a close match in Swindon against his dad Colin, who is also a professional. Any local company wishing to gain some TV exposure by sponsoring Paul Boulton should get in touch with Martin Toomer of MCT Promotions on 07515 820541.
