A TEAM of students from the University of Gloucestershire won 10-7 in the thrilling final of this year’s Minety Sevens tournament against SMU Sharks, a side composed of current and former students of Swansea Metropolitan University.

This was the biggest and best Minety Sevens tournament yet, with 14 teams and some 140 players taking part.

A large crowd of spectators turned out to watch and even the regular rain showers failed to dampen their enthusiasm for an enthralling day of continuous rugby action.

The hosts fielded three sides: a first team called Mighty Minety, Minety Dreamers, representing the second XV, and an U18 Minety Academy squad.

There were also entries from Melksham, Pewsey Vale, Sutton Benger, Tetbury and Wootton Bassett rugby clubs, plus a team representing Dyson and a range of invited specialist seven-a-side teams.

The first round of the tournament was organised in two groups of seven teams playing on two parallel pitches and with every side playing every other team in their group. Based on six games per team, with two points for a win and one for a draw, the results of the first round were as follows: Group 1: Gloucestershire University 12pts; Mighty Minety 10pts; Sutton Benger RFC 8pts; Minety Academy 6pts; Urine Trouble 4pts; Dyson 2pts; Tetbury RFC 0pts (withdrew after 4 matches).
