Reaction needed after Town's drubbing at Rovers

JUST think of the add-ons. We all knew that former Swindon striker Simon Cox would come good in the Championship and seven goals in seven games for West Brom suggests he might yet fire them back into the Premiership.

As soon as manager Roberto di Matteo has given him a run of games, he has come up with the goods and it was a precious injury time equaliser against QPR on Monday night to keep up the Baggies’ promotion push.

If West Brom get to the Premiership, presumably that would trigger lucrative extra payments as part of Coxy’s £1.9m summer transfer to West Brom.

I wonder if chairman Andrew Fitton also penned a clause about future international football in the Coxy deal, now the 22-year-old is courting Ireland’s national boss Giovanni Trapattoni as a result of having a grandmother from Galway.

There must be a tidy sum from the Coxy transfer fund earning interest in the Swindon Town bank account. However promising Charlie Austin has been, let’s hope that cash is earmarked for a serious replacement striker in the January window. It will also be interesting if the loan spells of both Alan Sheehan and Danny Ward are extended. It is a little too early to draw conclusions about either, but Ward has already indicated he would like to prolong his stay to three months, while there are mutterings that Sheehan would like his temporary move from Leeds to be made permanent.

Simon Ferry looks a shoo-in for a loan extension, but not so his Celtic teammate Ben Hutchinson despite another goal for the reserves against Forest Green on Tuesday night. The jury is still out on Southend striker Alex Revell Presumably, old boy Hal Robson Kanu’s now-regular appearances in the Reading matchday squads rules out any approach for him in January.

A former player we certainly don’t want having a blinder on Saturday is Peter Brezovan. Linking up with his old mentor Gus Poyet at Brighton seems to have boosted his confidence and I, for one, am looking forward to his County Ground return.

Obviously, after the drubbing by Bristol Rovers on Saturday, we are all looking for a positive reaction, much as the side pulled out after the opening day disaster at Gillingham.

Manager Danny Wilson put an admirably positive spin on Saturday’s defeat – in public at least. I suspect that behind closed doors he was less than flattering in his assessments.

The January transfer window should see him put together the final pieces of his own Swindon Town team.

If he can add one or two new faces with a similar level of success to his summer signings – which have generally been excellent – we may well start to the see the hitherto elusive consistency that is the hallmark of a team with realistic play-off potential.
