LIAM Smith, an opening bowler for Worcestershire's 2nd XI last summer who is currently playing Grade A cricket in Sydney, is joining the youthful revolution at Lechlade CC.

Nineteen-year-old Smith joins a squad under captain Freddie Martin (20), vice captain Ollie Thornley (21) and free-scoring South African Bradley Dial (20).

Smith, originally from Yorkshire, is a former Malvern College pupil who has played at every age group for Worcestershire from U13s.

Last season he was a main strike bowler for Worcestershire's 2nd XI when his best figures were 3-20 in the demolition of Midlands rivals Nottinghamshire.

His victims that day included England Test star Joe Root's brother Billy and Tom Moores, the son of former England coach Peter Moores.

Smith has also been a consistent performer for Barnards Green in the Birmingham & District Premier League Division One for the past three seasons.

"I am very excited about having Liam on board," said skipper Martin.

"He slots straight into our youthful side and will take the average age of our first team squad to just 22 years old, which I believe is a huge strength for the club.

"Liam is currently playing Grade A cricket in Sydney and is the leading wicket taker among the seam bowlers in his league.

"He's also a hard-hitting middle-order batsman, with the ability to be very destructive."

Lechlade's winter nets begin this weekend and all are welcome.
