Peyton Manning breaks another record but continues to disappoint with his performance, as younger quarterbacks are given their big chance by teams.

The Big Stories

Peyton Manning breaks record

Another NFL record fell to Peyton Manning on Sunday night as the he broke the number of passing yards record, previously held by Brett Farve.

The record went in the first quarter of the Broncos’ game against the Chiefs, with a four-yard pass to running back, Ronnie Hillman, moving Manning to 71,840 career passing yards two more than Farve who has held the record since 2010.

The game was briefly stopped while the crowd gave Manning a huge ovation.

Despite breaking the record, Manning played one of the worst games of his career, eventually being benched in favour of Brock Osweiler with the Broncos at 22-0.

Manning, who is also on the bench for the Bears game this Sunday with a foot injury, will have to wait until the game against the Patriots for the chance to break Farve’s all-time regular season win record of 186.

Yet another one bites the dust

It would appear that few teams are afraid to make big coaching changes this season, as the New Orleans Saints joined the ever growing list, firing defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan, on Monday.

The decision came as the Saints headed into a bye week and followed the 47-14 loss to the Redskins on Sunday.

Ryan embarked on a quest to create the league’s most versatile secondary last year but instead of finding versatility, the Saints defense have allowed more and more points and are currently ranked last in the league.

Senior defensive assistant, Dennis Allen, has been promoted to coordinator and Rob is left pondering his future in the sport.

However, his twin brother and Buffalo Bills head coach, Rex Ryan, has not ruled out the possibility of Rob joining his team, commenting: “I’ll never say never”.

Browns change tact

After a decisive performance in last week’s loss to the Steelers, Johnny Manziel has been handed the starting quarterback job in Cleveland for the rest of the season.

In Pittsburgh, Manziel threw for 372 yards and a 73 per cent completion rate, with little help from his teammates, who incurred 12 penalties for a total of 188 yards.

However, Manziel himself admits that the work starts off the field, promising not to do anything that would be an embarrassment to the organisation.

This statement follows an incident in October when Manziel was pulled over by police after witnesses reported him for driving dangerously and his girlfriend claimed he had beaten her in the car, although she declined to press charges and left with the quarterback.

The league decided this week not to discipline Manziel, but both they and the Browns will want future headlines to only be about his on field activities.

Manziel replaces veteran Josh McGown, who despite only winning one game this season for a team that are 2-8, leaves the field with the respect of the fans and his pride intact.

The Browns didn’t make it easy for McGown who was sacked 22 times, played without a running game, dynamic receiver or experienced coordinator.

Problems Manziel will have to find a way to play around to prove his ability as a potential franchise quarterback.

Week Eleven Preview

St Louis Rams @ Baltimore Ravens

Joe Flacco’s performance is often questionable but he did manage to get the Raven’s offense moving in last week’s tough loss to the Jaguars, targeting Kamar Aiken 14 times.

However, despite Flacco and Aiken’s efforts, this remains an offense lacking in both firepower and ability to close games, having lost seven games this season by an average of 4.6 points.

If the Ravens want the win, they need to up their game in the fourth quarter.

On the other side of the ball, the Rams’ biggest problem is quarterback, Nick Foles, who continues to struggle, completing 47 passes for an average of 5.7 yards last week.

The Rams are a team built to work around the short-comings of their quarterback and the key to victory is for running back, Todd Gurley II, to run the ball, albeit more efficiently and with patience.

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings

Mike McCarthy has ruled out taking back control of offensive shot calling in Green Bay but if their current form continues, his hand may be forced.

Aaron Rodgers missed Wednesday’s practice with a shoulder injury, a cause for concern but not surprise for fans, as the offensive line is unable to protect him in the pocket and the wide receivers are failing to get open.

This is a team that is starting to miss the surety and talent of Jordy Nelson, while their other top players, like Eddy Lacy, are carrying injuries and the new replacements are lacking in confidence; leading to missed throws, fumbles and costly interceptions.

The Vikings currently sit on top of the NFC North, which the Packers have won for the last four years, making this a crucial game for both teams.

The Vikings are also faced with problems, currently ranked 31st in the league for air attack as Teddy Bridgewater is seemingly unable to throw the ball, leading the team to rely on handing the ball to Adrian Peterson.

However, Peterson picked up a hamstring injury in last week’s game against the Raiders, an opportunity the Packers defense will look to exploit.

Vikings players were greeted with ‘Beat Green Bay’ t-shirts on Monday, courtesy of coach, Mike Zimmer, and they certainly have the advantage but don’t rule the Packers out.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Arizona Cardinals

The Bengals suffered their first defeat of the season on Monday night to a dominant Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Andy Dalton appeared to return to his pre-2015 form struggling to throw downfield, missing open receivers and throwing interceptions.

Meanwhile, Tyler Eifert, who many have compared to Rob Gronkowski, dropped the ball three times compared to just two drops over the previous seven games.

The Bengals performance this season has been confident and consistent and fans will hope that the team returns to it on Sunday, as Dalton faces a strong Cardinals defense.

The Cardinals did not make their win over the Seahawks easy, with the pocket around Carson Palmers collapsing on multiple occasions, leaving the quarterback exposed.

With home field advantage, the Cardinals will aim to follow Michael Floyd’s example, he had seven catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns in Seattle, ensuring the Legion of Boom remembered his name.

Honourable Mention

Expect Rex Ryan to be very talkative this weekend ahead of the Patriots game, despite accepting that they have already won the AFC East.

Don’t forget that this is the game Ryan circles on his calendar as he would love the Bills to be the team to hand Brady his first 2015 defeat

Next Week: Three games on Thursday as America celebrates Thanksgiving, including an NFC North match-up between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers, before old rivals Peyton Manning and Tom Brady face-off in the Big Sunday Night Game.
