BOB FRY celebrated his 90th birthday by doing what he normally does on a Wednesday evening – taking part in the racing at Bowmoor Sailing Club.

Sailing is possibly unique in sport in that it provides an opportunity to participate whatever your age or ability and Bob is proof positive that age is no barrier.

He is the oldest member of Bowmoor Sailing Club and still thoroughly enjoys getting out on to the water in his solo dinghy.

The club presented him with a card and a cake after taking part in a recent Wednesday race.

Bob joined in 1980, soon after the club was formed, although he is not the longest serving member.

He has his wife to thank for starting him off in the sport as it was while on holiday in Torquay that she thought it would be a good idea for him to have some sailing lessons. He has not looked back.

In 1980, he bought a bright yellow hulled Enterprise in which he taught his son to sail.

He has passed on the love of sailing to two generations as his two grandsons, respectively 17 and 14, sail a Feva dinghy together at Emsworth Sailing Club, Chichester.

Bob said: "Although I have to choose my weather carefully these days, I still think sailing is a very enjoyable and relaxing way to spend my time."
