LOCAL golf star Ross Langdon has been dominating regional professional events of late in a relentless run of form.

The South Cerney Golf Course playing professional won his last four South West PGA regional events to close out the 2014 season.

Having finished in the top 10 for 28 out his last 37 events in the region, this is by no means a lucky streak.

Coached by South Cerney professional Tom Motley, Langdon’s improvements over the last 12 months have been significant.

“It’s just down to better preparation, really,” said 27-year-old Langdon.

“I’ve been doing a lot of work with Tom who has made a massive difference.

“Our focus has been performance-orientated rather than working on technicalities.

“The last year has been when the improvement has come, the consistency is there now.”

Consistency is followed by confidence and Ross’ fine run of recent form has allowed him to enjoy the game again.

“When I first turned pro I thought I had to go out there and make a score,” he said. “Now I can just go out and play golf freely.”

That wasn't the case two and a half years ago when he and Motley first joined forces

“When we started working together Ross was down on his game, lacking confidence,” said Motley.

“It didn’t take much to get his swing back, it was more about his struggles mentally and how he prepared for tournaments.

“We worked on testing him with practice that resembled the level of pressure on the course.

“Mine has been a support role, really; when it’s right, I tell him why and when it’s wrong, he knows why.

“In each area of his game he’s improved dramatically.

“More than anything, however, it is improved confidence.

“He’s matured a lot in the last two years. His expectations are higher but he accepts when he doesn’t perform at his peak.”

There was immediate evidence of that after Ross failed to get through qualifying school for the Europro Tour at the end of March. He responded by shooting a two-under par 69 at the second PGA West Region Titleist/Footjoy Assistant Sprint events at Cumberwell Park the very next day.

Motley added: “The potential to go further is there for Ross without a doubt and the more experience he gets, the better will be.”
