Wootton Bassett 30 Stow 11
WOOTTON BASSETT were worthy winners over Stow but the match was a lot closer than the 30-11 scoreline suggests.
Stow played their best rugby for some weeks in patches and are now beginning to replicate some of their early-season form. However, they will need to be more clinical and consistent.
Early signs were good with plenty of possession and strong running, although the home side defended well.
The opening score came when Bassett entered the Stow 22 for the first time and a penalty conceded at the breakdown resulted in three points. Stow hit back straight away, running the ball out of their own half with James Holmes eluding several tacklers to score in the corner; Nick Cafearo was just wide with the conversion.
Bassett regained the lead with their second penalty then extended it from the re-start when some weak tackling leaked a converted try under the posts.
At the break Bassett led 13-5.
Stow were soon back in the game and two quick penalties from Cafearo took them to 11 points and only a score away from the lead. However, another set piece infringement led to a Bassett penalty which was successfully kicked before two late converted tries sealed the win for the home side.
Stow will be disappointed but will also have regained some confidence from their display.
