Dorset & Wilts Cup

Bradford-on-Avon U17s 0 Royal Wootton Bassett U17s 20

BASSETT U17s Colts scored four second-half tries to storm to a 20-0 Dorset & Wilts Cup final win on Sunday over Bradford-on-Avon.

Bassett's success story began in the 2012/13 season when they were crowned Division Two champions before taking the Wiltshire Division One title last year.

The memory of last year's narrow defeat to Wimborne at the combined county cup final stage had driven a determined Bassett throughout the season.

The continued support of sponsors Dick Lovett BMW had allowed the talented squad to improve further and achieve success over the region's bigger clubs.

The final involved 44 players, none of whom have been selected by the Dorset and Wiltshire county sides or Bath Academy – a point not lost on victorious coach Mark Roshier.

With the half-time score at 0-0, coaches Roshier and Garry Darragh rallied their side and Dan Thompson got the scoring started five minutes into the second half.

Bassett back row Jake O'Neill extended the lead to 10-0 before Dan Sweeney and Tom Davies took the score to 20-0.

With four of the victorious squad eligible to play for the club's U16s, Roshier said: “Winning is just a by-product and the future is looking good for Wootton Bassett rugby."

Elsewhere at the weekend, an experimental U16s squad travelled to Thatcham to gain a well-deserved 22-22 draw The U15s squad made 14 changes from the side that previously played Melksham in the cup and ran out 32-22 victors at a combined Fairford/Faringdon side. The U15s remain unbeaten this season.

The U14s were also victorious in their cup tie when defeating Corsham at Ballards Ash.
