GLOUCESTERSHIRE’S Deer Park Archers enjoyed a medal rush at the British Junior Championships held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on Saturday.

Deer Park were represented by a strong overall team of 24 and the final medal haul was four golds, four silvers and two bronzes.

There were national championship titles and gold medals for Phoebe Pine (Cirencester) , Rachel Lucas, Riley Spencer-Nice (Cirencester) and Lucy Mason, who also won the overall compound title for all ages.

Phoebe's win was particularly noteworthy as she is part of the Paralympic Development Squad and this was the first able-bodied national competition she has won. Riley's victory included beating Archery GB Academy contestants.

The silver medal winners were Chloe A'Bear (Cirencester), Connie Healey, Fin Cummins (Stroud) and Holly Clifford (Hucclecote).

Bronze medals were won by Hamish Ponton and and Paige Tucker.

The best performance of the day was reserved for James Howse, 15, who elected to shoot in the back-to-back senior competition.

James qualified for the 12-strong final in second place from a field of 30, winning four of his matches and losing just one. He then acquitted himself way beyond expectations to win two of his five matches and losing two more by just a single point.

James’ fifth match was against Compound legend Chris White and it went right to the final end, with James shooting a 29 and Chris a perfect 30 to win by just one point.

Head coach and founder Roger Crang said: "This was our best performance at the British Indoor Championships and our position should strengthen further as our award-winning Bambies Club for five to seven-year-olds is starting to produce some fantastic juniors."
