GOOD things come to those who wait . . . I am pretty sure we have all heard those seven words.

It might be to explain the summer break that seems to go on forever without any football, why we can’t have that new PlayStation until Christmas, or to soften the boredom of being forced to walk around hundreds of shops on an empty stomach by 'the other half'.

The phrase cropped up last week. A last-minute change in the schedule saw Swindon Town chairman Lee Power address the local media for the first time in an age.

The purpose of Power’s sudden and rare outing in front of the local hacks was to announce that Town skipper Nathan Thompson had put pen to paper on a new contract with the club, keeping the local boy made good at SN1 until the summer of 2017.

It was news that not only lifted the fans, but also the dressing room and the backroom staff at The County Ground.

Thompson is the heartbeat of Swindon Town's current crop of young but extremely talented players. His mere presence demands the utmost respect while serving as an inspiration and role model for Town’s academy scholars.

Power stressed on numerous occasions that Thompson’s new contract was a 'big' and 'massive' day for the football club, and you can’t argue with that.

Leeds, Norwich and Peterborough were all chasing the oldest of the Thompson brothers throughout the summer, and since moving to a sweeper position this season, a role that looks tailor-made for the 23-year-old, his price tag would have been bolstered considerably.

So the fact the club has tied Nathan down, and are in discussions with other key members of a squad that currently sits third in League One, certainly sends out all the right messages following a summer of doom and gloom.

Power spoke to the local media for just under 50 minutes, addressing all matters from extending Jake Reeves’ contract (expect that to be done by the time you read this) to a new training ground facility.

It was a press call that could not help but make you feel like you were walking on air.

Sometimes everything clicks together, and dare I say it, the future finally looks bright for a club with a bizarre and dramatic history like Swindon Town.

So, you see, good things do come to those who wait.
