GLOUCESTERSHIRE director of cricket John Bracewell insists the new Royal London One-Day Cup competition is tailor-made for Will Gidman.

The all-rounder starred with bat and ball as Gloucestershire stunned Yorkshire at Headingley on Tuesday to pick up their first win in the new 50-over competition and bounce back from their opening defeat against Northamptonshire.

Gidman took 2-28 off eight overs as Yorkshire were bowled out for just 192 and then hit an unbeaten 71 to see Gloucestershire over the line with three wickets and 28 balls to spare.

Bracewell said: “We always said this could be a competition for Will Gidman because 50-overs cricket suits his bowling and he showed that it does.

“It was good to beat a class side like Yorkshire who have some outstanding cricketers. To tip them over on their home turf is a good effort.”

David Payne (3-31) and Gidman made early inroads with the new ball to reduce Yorkshire to 45-5 after they decided to bat first.

The hosts recovered with Jack Leaning and Adil Rashid sharing a 129-run partnership but they lost their last five wickets for just eight runs with Jack Taylor, returning to the side in the absence of the injured Alex Gidman (back) taking 2-33.

Although captain and opening batsman Michael Klinger scored 37, Gloucestershire were soon in trouble in their chase on 83-6.

However, Will Gidman and Taylor (38) put on 69 in 13.2 overs to sway the game in their favour.

An unbroken partnership of 41 between Gidman and Tom Smith (4*) sealed Gloucestershire’s win.

Gloucestershire take on Hampshire and Leicestershire at Bristol on Thursday and next Tuesday respectively in the One-Day Cup.
